It looked like the rain threatened to put a stop to the main even, the Senior UK Open. What this year showed was that through rain or shine the die hard Oware enthusiasts are undetered by weather conditions. Fortunately we were protected by a very large tree under which we were placed and a canopy which was provided be George Doughty.
So whilst it rained and people were taking cover the Oware competitors and enthusiasts enjoyed themselves with some warm up games. once the rain cleared and the sun came out the ambience of the event had to be experienced. People started coming in their numbers wearing multicoloured clothing both traditional & contemporary. With the live music blarring in the background and the smell of food coming from the food stands. It was a ball an electrifying environment especially for Oware. The only down side was the smoke coming from the Barbecue stalls.
The Ghanaians proved their love for the game by enthusiastically gravitating to the Oware stand. Most of the time all the stools were occupied. At times there was a waiting period for the stool to have a game. Some enthusiasts who did not necessarily come for the tournament proved that if they had they would have won as is always the case with these type of events.
This year we were pleasantly surprised to have as fellow competitors two ladies from Kazakhstan. Players of Toguzkumalak and had only recently taken up Oware. In all we were five participants the ladies from Kazakhstan Glenda Trew, George Doughty and Seth Bonti. After the warm up games it was clear that the ladies from Kazakhstan had come with a purpose and were not going give any quarter and take no prisoners. They proved to be formidable players for relative new commers to the game. Putting up a good fight and prevailing in a good number of matches they played. Especially Dinara Kassenova who placed 2nd only to be pipped from the top spot by Glenda Trew. Seth Bonti placed third place with.
